As a teenager in your first significant relationship, how did you handle yourself when the relationship ended? Is there something you wish you could have done differently?

  1. Tricia: As a teenager, I had boyfriends, but none were so significant that they resulted in a traumatic break-up for me. I was always pretty good at moving on and keeping busy with my friends, family, sports and other positive things in my life.
Steve: I remember trying to break up with a girl and she started crying so I kept going out with her for another couple of months. Looking back, I would have handled this differently and I would have ended the relationship when I originally wanted to. My advice... don't stay in a relationship because you are afraid to hurt someone.

  2. My first love broke my heart! I was devestated! I was a sophomore in high school. It was especially difficult because we were friends first and still hung in the same social circle. I reacted the way any hurt 15 year old would have...I keyed his car! Just kidding! I did have girlfriends of mine "spy" on him, and I remember thinking that I would have done anything, changed anything do get him back, but I didn't. Do I wish that I had the confidence back then and the self respect to realize that clearly wasn't the one for me? Yes. But did I "do" anything I would change? No. Consequently, he is still a very close friend of mine, and I tease him every chance I get that he broke my heart. -Ellen

  3. I never really dated, well had anything serious till college. When the relationship I did have ended, we went our separate ways. I don't wish I had done anything differently, they were all learning experiences. --Val

  4. Ken - I moved on, I was too self absorbed in my own world of friends and basketball that I didn't dwell on it too long.

Louise - The first real significant break-up was with a guy who was a freshman in college while I was still a Junior in high school. I remember he called me two weeks before we were supposed to go to the Junior Prom, to break up with me....his words...don't worry Louise you are a popular girl you will have no problem getting a date to the prom, really didn't do much to make me feel better. I was upset for a day or two, but had more important things to focus on...like get a date to the prom!

  5. I felt the world was going to end!! I don't think anything got much worse than a breakup growing up...It was someone you shared so many things with and were practically losing a best friend. I felt nobody was around for me (because most of the times you end up ditching your friends for this guy/girl), so not only do you not have a bf/gf, you have to fight to try to get your other friends back!

Looking back, I wouldn't have done anything differently. I made sure to take each relationship as a learning experience so my next girlfriend would benefit from it. I knew I was never going to marry a high-school sweetheart, so I was never worried about making the relationship last forever. Not that I was dating people and throwing them to the side, but this gave me the opportunity to objectively look at the relationship and see what went right/wrong. I'd like to think that I was the spitting image of a great boyfriend when I met Jenna, but I'd only be lying. I still had some work to do, but knew I had something special when I met her....it's always a work in progress and when you fail to grow, please review the prior question!!! ha.
